"..Hybrid employees tend to outperform office-only employees, and are far happier. The reason is this flexibility is a huge benefit for the employees, they get to do activities they really value while out performing at work. "
--Anatomy of Work 2022
We are a flexible team of talented individuals from a variety of careers with strong skills and some serious problem-solving abilities!
We hold identities of individuals who are disabled, transitioning in life, living with invisible illnesses, caretakers, and life-long seekers for the best of life in everything we do.
"Respecting the autonomy of workers is an issue of disability justice and creates economic opportunities for those who are regularly denied the opportunity to work due to both visible and invisible disabilities. Autonomy is an important factor in worker satisfaction and retention, too! Autonomy in location allows workers to create conditions that allow for their best work, which are not the same for everyone."
--Rachel Anne Kieran, Psy.D.
We are the resilient workforce that keeps your world (and our own!) continuing seamlessly through changes in your scope of work, project challenges, and in the ebb and flow of life's tides that impact everyone.
As often as possible, we hire transitional/dynamic workers because they are uniquely suited to virtual work and to developing a strong yet flexible working relationship with clients. Workers might be partially able after chronic illness, changing from a caregiving role to working, or exploring careers. Marginalized populations - like people who live with disability, chronic illness, poverty, or other situations - deserve an opportunity to succeed and strive. Our assistants may hold these identitites, and they also hold sharp skills, talented problem-solving, and dedicated mindsets.
Our mission is to enable clients to reach their goals by providing adaptive and creative office solutions.
We are dedicated to supporting our assistants to build a healthy work/life balance through the cycles of life and encourage the integrated development of our VAs as individuals and virtual team members.
We are committed to making our corner of the e-world a better place for clients, other humans, and ourselves through compassionate and intentional attention to our footprint.

I am a passionate Executive Assistant/Professional, human in development, and all around hard worker. I blend skills from all areas of my life as an English teacher, published author, executive support staff, Domestic Goddess*, educator, home schooler, event coordinator, project manager, mime, editor, and stage crew. It is deepest wish to make my corner of the universe a little better. I have won awards, been on TV as an expert, served in my communities through volunteer work, but I am most proud that I am creating the world I want to live in.
As a fat, queer, disabled woman, I experience the challenge the world offers and I stand with my community. I meet challenges with curiosity.
I am a wild woman with interests in polyamory, women’s studies, fat justice, domestic goddess-ing, living intentionally through choice, tiny homes, self development, social justice, and all things crafting. I walk in the world through thick and thin with my family of the heart plus dogs, cats, and horses, oh my!
*Domestic Goddess = a person who brings intention, skill, and a sense of pride to the art of home and hearth as an expression of creativity and self.

I have bounced around in many roles within the companies I have worked with and thus far have been lucky to learn a lot of unexpected skills. I want to always be learning!
Primarily, my relevant experience is in customer service, project implementation, process improvement, creating and presenting training materials, tradeshow representation, in person and phone sales, and even leadership mentoring. I have also dabbled in graphic design and social media maintenance, plus I have a lot of experience with many kinds of software.
Professionally, I am enthusiastic, confident, and creative in problem solving. I like new projects and am rarely too daunted to tackle something I am unfamiliar with. I love to find unconventional solutions and I am very goal oriented.
Personally, I am queer, polyamorous, crafty, extroverted, and upbeat. I believe in speaking up for those who need to be heard, but are underrepresented. I try to be a safe space for my people to be themselves and I encourage folks to live as genuinely as possible.

The willow tree is renowned for its flexibility and for its ability to seek water aggressively through even the hardest of soils. WillowTreeVA was named for that supple, flexible nature and for the deeply rooted persistence of the roots. Flexible and adaptable to your needs, our VAs have the strength to learn new skills and pursue new technologies to help you take a deep breath of fresh air.
Quality work and commitment to our values rule everything we do. Working as a team we support each other and our clients.
WillowTreeVA sprang from my desire to balance Scarlett's life between the roles of caretaker, writer, and passionate helper of others. With a strong connection to nature, Scarlett saw the willow tree and felt a deep sense of peace - the thing she wanted to feel for herself at work as well as to give to her clients.
"I'm all about better life through better business." - Danielle Keister
The story of WillowTree begins with Scarlett, and it's a familiar one.
Scarlett taught high school English, raised a child, took care of family, and decided she needed a career she could embrace without losing touch with the parts of life that mattered most. When a friend needed help with emails and editing, Scarlett began working as a virtual assistant in 2009 (before it was cool!).
Scarlett had been a dedicated stay-at-home parent, though that term barely captures the effort she brought to that work. Everything she did reflected her values — from community involvement and homeschooling to recycling and intentional living. She approached each role in life with the same dedication that made her a published writer and top of her class. But as her child grew, she experienced firsthand the discrimination that came with being queer, "unemployed," and later disabled. This knowledge sank deep and brought up a determination to do something differently.
Working as a virtual assistant for sex therapists allowed Scarlett to honor her own transition from one stage of life to the next. Still, she recognized that not everyone had access to the same resources, encouragement, and education that made that possible. She wanted to do something about that. So she dreamed up WillowTree Virtual Assistants.
People work from home, in coffee shops, in their own businesses, or in someone else's office for countless reasons. Stay-at-home parents returning to professional work often struggle with that leap. Scarlett had been there too and she used every resource to grow, learn, and create something worthwhile.
At WillowTree, the vision was clear: hire people with experience who might not fit a traditional mold. Serve clients who are making a difference in small ways and large ones. Make a difference to those clients and assistants and you'll make a difference in our corner of the world. Train the assistants. Honor the clients. Build a system grounded in worker autonomy, mutual respect, and clarity of purpose.
That vision still guides everything WillowTree does today.
